Dibrugarh Municipality dustbin turns into nuisance

A Correspondent

Dibrugarh: The municipality dustbin, right across one of the entrances to the Dibrugarh Town Railway Station, has snowballed into a complete nuisance. With a large amount of waste of all kinds being dumped in the dustbin, which lies in a residential area, the site has become a breeding ground for flies, besides polluting the surroundings with its highly offensive odour. The situation has only become worse due to poor maintenance and a flippant outlook towards it by the Dibrugarh Municipal Board. Despite several complaints by the residents of that area, the board brushed all that aside.

Looking at the pathetic condition of the dustbin, several people of the town could not help recalling a time when the site used to be a major dumping ground, and how the then municipality took care of the condition by closing down the site for dumping after the intelligentsia and public registered their displeasure over it through different media.

Now, those people are apprehensive that things are going back to square one under the present municipality regime. The dustbin is also hurting the tourism prospects of the town. Given its proximity to the railway station, it is the first thing a tourist notices after exiting the station. In these circumstances, the conscious people of the town have urged the district administration and municipality to take immediate steps to address the problem. They suggested either dismantling the site, or implementing measures to ensure regular and timely cleaning of the dustbin, preferably late at night.
