Dibrugarh Police Seeks Extension of Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) Probe

GUWAHATI: Citing varied reasons for not being able to complete its investigation into the cash-for-job scam in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC), Dibrugarh police have sought a three-month extension of the investigation.

To this effect, Dibrugarh police filed a petition before the Special Court here on March 5, 2019. Admitting the petition on Wednesday, the court fixed March 12, 2019 for issuing the necessary order on the plea.

Dibrugarh police have cited the two-month agitation in the State against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 as one of the reasons that hampered the investigation into the APSC scam. The police have also told the special court that the investigating officer (IO) of the cash-for-job scam in the APSC has been under an order of transfer to Golaghat district, at present.

According to sources, the investigating officer was busy in compiling and sending of a large number of documents pertaining to Dibrugarh police station case (936/16) as sought for by the Supreme Court of India for removal APSC members.

The other factors that hampered the investigation, according to the sources, are the non-receipt of the prosecution sanctions for some accused; pending thorough examination of the cloned copies of the computers seized from APSC office, Guwahati received from the FSL, Ahmedabad; the non-receipt of certain reports and exhibits from FSL Guwahati; the necessity of examination of some other persons/witnesses as described in the first case diary that was submitted before court before completion of investigation; and the Lok Sabha elections slated to be held in April/May this year.
