Dibrugarh town reels under flash floods for incessant rain

Dibrugarh: The town continued to suffer under the impact of flash floods on Wednesday. Things only turned worse with incessant rain. Prominent areas of the town, including, Thanacharali, Bagchipara, Chowkidinghee, Graham Bazaar, Santipara, locality next to Bagmibor Nilomoni Phukan HS School and RKB Path, among others, received the brunt of the adverse effect of the artificial floods. The rickshaw-pullers were seen having a good day, as many people, to avoid wading through the waters, preferred a ride with them. Many office-goers were seen having a hard time reaching their workplace on time as water got logged in front of their offices, as well as due to traffic congestion brought about by the urban floods.

While Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha has urged the Dibrugarh Municipal Board to act on cleaning the drains of the accumulated dirt and filth, one wonders why such expedition was not shown earlier when rains had not gathered such momentum and frequency. Chairperson of DMB, Souma Chakraborty said that her office had already begun the task of cleaning the second main drain as well as the other drains, but many people here are wondering as to what caused them act so late.

In many places, the task of cleaning the smaller drains was taken up at the eleventh hour. Such half-hearted and ill-conceived tasks are the prime reason behind the current pathetic condition at many places, including Chowkidinghee, which is quite close to the DC office.
