DHUBRI: Dhubri District Railway Development and Passengers’ Association expressed deep resentment over discontinuation of DEMU rail service from Siliguri to New Bongaigaon via Dhubri and vice-versa since the last couple of months.

The association in a press release alleged that after long demand by the association, the DEMU rail service was introduced a couple of years ago but without any notice or information the train service was stopped since September 24, 2018 causing a great deal of inconvenience to the commuters on the route.

“Apart from affecting the daily commuters, it has also affected trade and business of this area as traders and businessmen used to avail the service of this DEMU train since it was the cheapest mode of transportation. But with the withdrawal or suspension of this service, they find it difficult now,” said Madhab Paul, president of the association.

Paul further informed that on November 18, one general coach was used as Sleeper by sticking a paper as sleeper coach in Rajyarani Express train from Dhubri to Silghat, and this aggrieved the passengers and people in general and they registered a strong protest resulting in two hours delay in departure of the train at Dhubri Railway Station. Talking to The Sentinel, Paul informed that the association had held several discussions with high railway officials at Alipurduar Divisional Railway on resuming the service of DEMU train but no step so far had been taken to restore the service.

“If the DEMO service is not restored within three days, the association will be compelled to launch agitation programmes, including rail roko, in the days to come,” Paul warned.
