SHILLONG, April 9: Villagers of Tynring (New Shillong Township) numbering in hundreds forcefully entered the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Thursday demanding the reinstatement of their suspended Sordar (Traditiol Village Council Chief) CA Diengdoh.

Earlier on March 26, the KHADC issued an order to remove the Sordar of Tynring CA Diengdoh based on a complaint made by the Women organization and the Youth organization of the village for alleged misuse of the MGNREGS funds, besides his alleged indulgence in illegal collection of money in connection with the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) scheme for the villagers.

Besides, the villagers forced themselves inside the KHADC premises to show their action of protest by vowing to go for an indefinite strike.

DW Pakyntein, executive member, Dorbar Tynring, said that the reason for the hunger strike is on the basis of the March 31 meeting with the executive committee W Syiemlieh.

Pakyntein claimed to have got an assurance that the matter will be resolved on or before April 5.

Since the 5th of April was Easter Sunday and the 6th of April was Easter Monday, they decided to go on the 8th to seek clarification from the Secretary on the issue, but the answer they got was that an inquiry is still pending and that the matter can’t be resolved until the result of the inquiry is out.

DW Pakyntein also said that the people had hoped to get a solution on or before the 5th of April but as it is there is still no sign of a solution. That is why we have decided to come here and organize an indefinite hunger strike inside the premises of the KHADC.

He further stated that until and unless the responsible authorities do not remove the suspension order of the Sordar they will continue with their hunger strike and will not move from the Office of the KHADC. He also said they have filed an RTI report and when they get the report they will consider taking this matter to Court.

KP Pangniang, executive member of the KHADC, while talking to reporters on Thursday, said that the reason for the suspension is because of the allegations which are being leveled against him.
