UDALGURI, May 26: The Udalguri District Legal Service Authority has urged the Udalguri Police to produce all the 19 persons who are suffering from mental illness before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, so that they can be sent for treatment and rehabilitation. Roshan Lal, the assistant session judge, has furnished all the details of 19 insane persons with a request to the police administration to produce them before the court through a letter DLSA(U) 51-54/16 dated 20 May, 2016 but no response has been received from the police, stated a release by the DLSA.

To make the Mental Health Act ected by the Parliament more effective, the tiol Legal Services Authority had recently formulated a special scheme for mentally ill persons. But despite the Act and the scheme, often such mentally ill persons are found roaming in the streets with no one to take care of them. A mentally ill woman, Jagali rzary, was found on the streets of Udalguri and produced by the OC Udalguri PS before the CJM, Udalguri. The CJM Udalguri then ordered for the medical treatment of the woman at Tezpur Mental Hospital and a medical report later came in that she was in a better condition than what she was earlier. The DLSA, Udalguri by order dated 21-04-2016 in misc case 04/2016 has directed that Rs 15,000 be given to the woman for her medical expenses and for expenses towards her accommodation. There are many such people roaming in Udalguri and other sub-urban areas. If the police take action, such people could get the needed medical treatment, the DLSA release stated.
