Bongaigaon, May 21: A fake doctor was apprehended by Bongaigaon Police with the help of few conscious people. Debraj Bhattacharjee, a resident of Kolkata, had been practising in Bongaigaon as a specialist in skin and sexual diseases and counsellor of HIV, AIDS in a private pharmacy. He was arrested by Bongaigaon Police on Saturday night. OC Bijit Dadhora of Bongaigaon Police Station, said that Debraj had been sent to jail on Sunday. “Debraj was practising in Laxmi Medical Hall of Bongaigaon since the past few years as a visiting doctor. He introduced himself as an MD, DAFE and CHCWM degree holder from the Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. But he had never showed his certificates or registration certificate from the Indian Medical Council as medical practitioner to the owner of the pharmacy. The owner of the pharmacy became suspicious and he discussed this with few conscious people who informed the police.

“We nabbed him last night. During our interrogation it came to light that he is a fake doctor and does not have any registration number as medical practitioner. The registration number which he mentioned was of the year 1959 of some other doctor. We came to know that he is using someone else’s registration number and arrested him and sent him to jail,” Dadhora said. Dr D Choudhury, a well-known doctor of Bongaigaon, said such fake doctors posed a threat to the health and hygiene of people. “This is a crime and stern action should be taken against it,” he said.
