SHILLONG, June 6: The Joint Action Committee of Social Organization, South West Khasi Hills district (JACSO), has urged the CEM of KHADC not to take any decision in haste in giving the NOC for the construction of Nongstoin Wahkaji-Mawthabah Road Project.
A team of JACSO, an umbrella organization of SSSS, HYC, FKJGP, HNYF, HANM, MIYF, WKSU, SPDF and SWKYF, led by its chairman Wallambok Syiemiong and secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin met KHADC chief PN Syiem on Monday and submitted a memorandum in this regard.
“According to the notification issued on July 5, 2010 by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, it was clearly stated that the construction of the two- lane road from Nongstoin-Pambriew-Wahkaji- Mawthabah sanctioned by the ministry, through the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North East (SARDP-NE) was meant to facilitate uranium mining in Mawthawbah area,” JACSO chairman, Syiemiong told newsmen.
He said that even though they welcome developments meant for the betterment and uplift of the area and the State as a whole, JACSO strongly oppose this road project in Mawthabah because it is meant to facilitate uranium mining. He also said that false assurances are coming from various quarters, including the company who is the contractor of this project which is trying to mislead the people.
“We don’t want any false assurance from uuthorized quarters but we want a clear notification and clarification, including a public notice from the Government of India,” he said.
