Don’t Support Citizenship Bill: Axom Xahitya Xabha (AXX) & ITSSA To Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: The Axom Xahitya Xabha (AXX) and the Indigenous Tribal Sahitya Sabha of Assam (ITSSA) have jointly staged a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 at Dighalipukhuripar here. The leaders of both the frontal literary organizations of the State announced that “under no circumstance would they accept the Bill”, and demanded that it be scrapped. Pointing out that “the Bill poses a threat to the age-old unity and communal harmony of the people of the State as well as secularism”, the representatives of the organizations added that “once the Bill is passed, Assam would become a second Tripura”.

AXX president Paramananda Rajbongshi appealed to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal not to support the Bill as “no one in the State is in its favour”. He also warned that if the Chief Minister refuses to read the writings on the wall then the AXX would not cooperate with the State government”.

Speaking on the occasion, All Assam Students Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya welcomed the stand taken by AXX and ITSSA. He further stated that the government should understand what the indigenous people are demanding.

In an emergent meeting of both the organizations in the evening, they decided to carry on the stir in Delhi as well.

Among those present on the occasion were AGP working president Keshab Mahanta as well the leaders of the Khilonjia Mancha Asom, AIUDF, and left parties.

ITSSA is a common literary platform of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Bishnupria Manipuri Sahitya Sabha, Garo Sahitya Sabha, Missing Sahitya Sabha, Deuri Sahitya Sabha, Rabha Sahitya Sabha, Karbi Sahitya Sabha and Tiwa Sahitya Sabha.
