Doomdooma tea worker gets 10-year jail

DIGBOI April 9: A special judge’s court here sentenced a tea estate worker to 10 years imprisonment for raping a minor girl. Special Court Judge PJ Saikia on Saturday convicted tea garden worker, Ram Kishore Karmakar of Pura Line, Silikha Tea Estate under Doomdooma Police Station, and sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI) with Rs 10,000 as fine after finding him guilty of raping a minor girl. The special court judge also directed the District Legal Service Authority to pay a sum of Rs 50,000 to the victim as compensation. The case was registered against Karmakar in 2013 at the Doomdoma Police Station after the victim disclosed the me of the convicted person responsible for her pregncy in front of the public at a meeting. Police subsequently registered a case vide case No. 307/13 and investigated the matter and submitted a charge-sheet against Karmakar in 2015. The judge in his order mentioned that for failure to pay the fine amount of Rs10,000, Karmakar would have to undergo an additiol month’s rigorous imprisonment.
