JORHAT, Oct 19: A popular educationist-cum-social worker and member of Jorhat Red Cross Society, Dr.Diganta Sarmah passed away at a private nursing home in Guwahati on Wednesday night, said family sources on Thursday. He was 52. He is survived by his mother, wife Prakiti Devi Sarma and two minor children.

Dr. Diganta Sarmah was a popular teacher who took over the charge of the headmaster of Dhanususa High School, Sunie Ali, AT road, Jorhat in the month of April, 2017. Apart from educating school children, Dr. Sarmah used to practise homeopathy and was actively associated with the Red Cross Society, Jorhat unit, said Dr Dipak Chakraborty, the chairman of Jorhat Red Cross Society.

As the news of Diganta Sarmah spread, people reached his residence at south Bongal Pukhuri to pay their last respects. His body was taken to the school at Sunie Ali AT road where staff, students and employees paid their last respects. Later, his last rites were performed at Tarajan crematorium in presence of a large gathering.
