Elected members have nexus with militants: Gaikhangam

IMPHAL, June 23: A major allegation has been leveled against some elected members of the Autonomous District Council in Imphal, Manipur. The allegation has been leveled by non other than the Deputy Chief Minister himself.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President, has alleged that some of the members of the Autonomous District Council who were elected on June 1, have nexus with militants and the matter is being looked into. He was speaking to reporters at the Congress office in Imphal on the sidelines of the observation of the death anniversary of Sanjay Gandhi on Tuesday.

He was responding to the charges leveled against the government by the ga People’s Front (NPF) on the reluctance of the government to administer the oath of office, to the elected ADC members to form the council. NPF alleged that the Congress which has failed to secure majority is trying to woo some other members and this is the reason behind the inordite delay in the formation of the council. Gaikhangam said that the government is trying to form the councils in the districts. However threats to some elected members by some armed groups continue and this is a very serious case.
