Elephant attack victims get compensation

DOOMDOOMA, April 25: Under State Plan Scheme ‘Reduce Man Elephant Conflict’ in 2014-15, a total of 34 victims were paid ex-gratia payment at a meeting held at the office of the Divisiol Forest Officer (DFO), Doomdooma Division today with Divisiol Forest Officer (DFO), K Z Jinh in the chair.

Of them, five victims—Ruhini Gogoi (Lakhyapur in Sadiya), Sukumoni Mura (zirating, Kailamati, Digboi), Dhaneswar Sarma (Line No.6, Hansara Division, Raidang TE), lika Moran (zirating, Tingrai) and Dhaniram Hasda—who died due to elephant attack, an ex-gratia payment of Rs one lakh each were paid to the next of their kin while six others who sustained injuries—were paid Rs 8,100 and the rest— Nikhil Sutradhar (Kakopather), Moni Sutradhar (Kakopather), Sujit Sutradhar (Kakopather), Bishnu Dey (Kakopather) and Phulbari Jain (Kakopather) were paid ex-gratia of Rs 20,000.

23 victims , whose houses and crops were damaged, were also paid ex-gratia amount. Local MLA, Dilip Moran attended the meeting as chief-guest while Mohan Sonowal, Councilor, Sonowal-Kachari Autonomous Council and Gudhar Konwar, Warden, Wild-Life Division, Doomdooma were present as guest of honour. Lakheswar Barua, Deputy Range Officer, Saikhowa offered the vote of thanks.
