Eminent academician passes away

MANGALDAI, May 22: Mahendra Baruah, an eminent academician, retired in-charge Principal of Mangaldai Government Higher Secondary School and a resident of Upahupara village, passed away in the early hours on Monday at a private hospital in Guwahati after a brief ailments. He was 80.

Born in the family of Lalit Ch Baruah and Guneswari Baruah as the only son, Mahendra Baruah, after completing secondary education, initially joined Mangaldai Government Higher Secondary School as a clerk. However, after few years he joined the same institution as an assistant teacher following completion of his graduation under Gauhati University pursuing education in a night college. Even though he had not studied English as the Major in degree level, due to his craze for English subject, studious attitude and perseverance, later he developed himself as a very dedicated teacher, especially in  English Grammar and Composition, and also as a sincere school administrator. At that time when Mangaldai Government Higher Secondary School happened to be the lone centre for both HSLC and HS fil examitions in Mangaldai, he was the key person in conducting the exams without a single controversy.

 Immediately after the news of his demise a large number of well wishers, former students, former colleagues, members of different local public organizations including Darrang District Senior Citizens’ Association, Pensioners’ Association , Mangaldai Chambers of Commerce, Mangaldai Media Circle, Crystal Vision along with Mangaldai legislator Gurujyoti Das, and  former minister Basanta Das visited his residence and offered floral tribute. He leaves behind his wife, a son and two daughters, including Nirmali Barua, Circle Officer in Dangtol Revenue Circle in Bongaigaon district, besides a host of relatives and friends.
