Emphasis laid on avoiding tobacco consumption

Dibrugarh, June 1: The World No Tobacco Day, 2016, was observed on Tuesday under the initiative of horoni Block Primary Health Centre and in collaboration with the District Health Committee. Keeping in view, the significance of the day, three different processions were taken out at harkatia, horoni and Rajgarh respectively.

An awareness meeting was also organized at the premises of horoni Primary Block Health Centre, which was iugurated by Deputy Commissioner MS Manivann. Speaking on the occasion, Manivann stressed the need for distancing oneself from the bad habit of tobacco consumption and said that in doing so, a person must be extended full cooperation by his family members.

The meeting, presided over by social worker Manik Gogoi, was attended amongst others by Revenue Officers, Sampriti Goswami and Pabitra Kumar Das, and Joypur Block Development Officer, Mahendrath Bora. The District Programme Mager of tiol Health Mission (NHM), Manisha Buragohain, District Project Officer of Sarva Shiksha Abhijan (SSA), Nivedita Borua, presented their respective views in the meeting.

The Zol Supervising Health Officer of Upper Assam, World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Bhabhajyoti Bora and Head of the Department of Bio- Chemistry, Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dr Kailash Bhattacharyya, attended the meeting as resource persons. In their respective deliberations, both Dr Bora and Dr Bhattacharya discussed the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and its preventive safeguards. Later, the Circle Health Officer of horoni Block Primary Health Centre, Dr Biswajit Borua, delivered the vote of thanks. To mark the observance of World No Tobacco Day, a free cancer detection medical camp, together with an exhibition was also held. Moreover, in the evening, a cultural function was organized by the health workers.

Earlier, the meeting was anchored by the District Media Specialist of tiol Health Mission (NHM), Debanga Vikas Gogoi.
