Enlivening talk show on eve-teasing

Silchar, June 19: A talk show titled ‘A Talk with Rajarshi’ was organized in Goldighi Mall, Central Road, on Friday. Anti Eve-Teasing (AET) is a group of some like-minded people, ranging from school going students to professiols from the different strata of the society. People from all walks of life came and actively participated in this open forum.

Rajarshi Bhattacharjee, an employee of the State Bank of India, is the leader of the group that has taken the painstaking task of freeing the town from the vice of eve teasing. The programme began with a 2 minute silence for the victims of Sopur mishap on June 14. It was followed by a soul-stirring performance ‘Bekhauf’ by Sangita Das. It was dedicated to all the girls who aspire to lead a free life in society.

After the stunning performance, a situation based alysis on the phases where questions were asked related to cases of road safety, usage of social networking sites, both use and misuse of cell phones. Different people who attended opined in their own ways. They added their suggestions regarding the steps needed to stop eve-teasing.  Participants also took a set of 10 oaths which were described as ‘consciousness’, ‘decision-making’ ‘confidence’, ‘protest’, ‘help’, ‘strength’, ‘sharing’, ‘self-dignity’, ‘payback’ and ‘reporting’. Deepanwita Das and Anya Choudhury read the oaths loudly and others repeated after them.

Emran Laskar and Shalini Choudhury made a beautiful presentation of some simple self-defence techniques. Shalini Choudhury has represented India and won Silver medal in the 18th Asian Games. She also had been a state level karate performer for seven consecutive years. Various important decisions were taken which include submission of a memorandum where it would be mentioned that the police should arrange for patrolling in some sensitive areas of the town. The memorandum will be addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, and Superintendent of Police, Cachar.

 Owing to the improper streetlights, there has been an increasing incident of cases of eve teasing. The programme ended on a high note with a beautiful dance performance ‘Mard’ by Shanu Sinha, which showed how a man should treat the women in his life. Among others who were present on the talk show included Himadri Adhikari, principal, Hemangini Dey College, Souman Choudhury, public prosecutor, District Bar Association, Rohit Gulgulia, owner of Gulgulia Trade Corporation, Shyam rayan Acharjee, assistant teacher, Public Higher Secondary School, and Amitesh Chakraborty, state joint secretary, ABVP.
