SHILLONG, April 30: tiol Khasi Union (NKU) on Thursday sought the immediate intervention of the Meghalaya Government to revise the rates of High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) in the State.

Addressing newsmen here, Samborlang Diengdoh, general secretary of NKU said, “Our people in the State are paying six times more as compared to the rates in Assam for the High Security Registration Plates,” adding that, “since India is a democratic country and in the spirit of democracy the voices and views of its citizen should be taken into consideration.”

Diengdoh informed that when they compared the rates of every class of vehicle in Meghalaya and Assam they found out that the rates being applied in the State is way higher than that of Assam.

“We would like to urge the Government to reconsider and revise the rates even if they have to sit with the company which issues these HSRPs so that the rates will be uniform with Assam,” said Diengdoh

Meanwhile, Sylvanus Mallai, president of NKU said, “There is no difference what so ever on the quality or size of the High Security Registration plates issued here and the one being issued in Assam,” adding that, “Assam is a neighbouring state which is not very far from Meghalaya so why the rates are so different and not uniform.”

He also said, “this is nothing more than an over ground extortion from the citizen of Meghalaya,” adding this has greatly affected a lot of people right from public vehicles owners down to private vehicles owners.
