Facebook, Google to share 'unexpected incidents' with Dhaka

Dhaka, June 12: Facebook, Google and Microsoft have agreed to share information related to any “unexpected incidents” with the Bangladesh government, an official said on Sunday. “Facebook, Google and Microsoft have agreed to provide us information on any unexpected incident within 48 hours after we request them,” Xinhua news agency quoted Bangladesh State Minister for Post and Telecommunication Tara Halim as saying. Bangladesh has been facing a surge in instances of abuse on social media platforms. Against this backdrop, the government has reportedly asked the leading social media platforms to share information related to any “unexpected incidents” with the Bangladesh government. A section of foreigners with their local cohorts has long been swindling people and stealing money, using various methods on social networking sites including Facebook, a source said. A few months back, Bangladesh’s elite anti-crime force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained 14 people, including 12 foreign tiols, for committing crimes using different social media platforms in the country.
