Family in Sonitpur uses legacy data of another person during NRC

NAGAON, Oct 2: Sensation prevailed in Hojai district following an incident where around seven members of a family living at Rongapara in Sonitpur district allegedly included their names in the recent final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) by using the legacy data of another person of Hojai district.

According to sources, one Faruk Ahmed of Rangapara in Sonitpur district allegedly used the legacy data of Abdul Gafur of Hojai in the recent NRC update process and he even included the names of his seven family members in Sonitpur district. Interestingly, the legacy was traced to a person who, along with his entire family, went back to Bangladesh after 1970 and in the voters’ list of the years 1977, 1985, 1989 and 1993, the names of the family members were left out.

On the other hand, the names of the family members of Faruk Ahmed and his father Abdul Wahid were not found in those voters’ lists. It is alleged that the name of Abdul Gafur’s son - Abdul Wahid – is similar to the name of Faruk’s father. Finally, Tomjid Ali of Hojai district brought it to the notice of the public and registered a case against Faruk Ahmed and his family members in the local court. Simultaneously, he intimated details to the State NRC coordinator, Prateek Hajela.
