FIR Against MP Rajen Gohain on charges of Alleged Rape, Sexual Assault

Nowgong: In what might be a big blow to the reputation of the ruling BJP government in the centre and the state ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Nowgong MP and Union Minister of State for Railways, Rajen Gohain has been booked for allegedly raping and sexually exploiting two girls.

The two girls who are sisters have filed an FIR against Gohain for the heinous act under the pretext of offering them jobs in the Ministry.

The Nagaon District Superintendent of Police Shankar B Raimedhi told the media that they have registered a case against Rajen Gohain on the basis of the FIR filed by a lady. She had mentioned herself and her sister as victims in the report. The victims have alleged that the Minister was exploiting them for the last 8 months by luring them with a job offer, after which he stopped communicating with them.

The victims who hail from Deorigaon near Nagaon have also claimed that they have audio clippings of their conversation with Rajen Gohain, where he was speaking indecently to them.

Police Officials told the Deputy Commissioner that there have been attempts to pressurize the women to withdraw the FIR.

The police have registered an FIR (no. 2592/18) under IPC section 417/376/506.

According to reports, however, neither the victims have been taken for a medical examination, nor has their statements been recorded.

The news is doing the rounds across social media platforms and has brought widespread castigation against the MP and the party. Gohain is a veteran BJP leader and has been representing the Nowgong Lok Sabha constituency since 1999.

This shocking incident comes at a time when the BJP government in Assam is inviting lots of criticisms against it for allegedly trying to settle immigrants in the state.

Minister Rajen Gohain too has been into controversies in the recent past for allegedly lambasting a former teacher in Nagaon when he took up the issue of bad roads in Nowgong during a Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan event.
