Five dead, 20 injured in bus accident

BONGAIGAON, March 19:  Five persons died, including a child, and many others were injured in a road mishap that occurred on NH-31 in North Salmara area under Abhayapuri PS in Bongaigaon district.

A bus (AS-17-B-0641) med Azad was coming from Dhubri to Goalpara when it fell from a bridge. Shahid Ali, an injured passenger, said, “The bus was moving at high speed and probably the driver lost control. The bus hit the side wall of the bridge and fell down after the wall broke.”

Around 20 people, including the driver and conductor of the bus, were seriously injured. The local people of the area rescued the injured people and took them to the hospital. Police also arrived and started rescue operation. Sujit Das (22), resident of Bilasipara in Dhubri district died in Civil Hospital while Sarbindo Ray (42),  resident of Boitamari in Bongaigaon district,  Gafuruddin Sheikh (53), resident of Boitamari in Bongaigaon district,  Rehe Khatun, resident of Malegarh of Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district and her daughter Kanya Mehzebin Choudhury (3) died in Lower Assam Hospital.  Some injured persons are in critical condition.
