Flood: A very old friend of Guwahati

Guwahati: Water, the very source of a living organism is indeed a threat to the residents of Guwahati, Assam. Every monsoon, the floods have created life-threatening consequences in and around Guwahati. This has become an annual feature of the city as well as the state. Over the years, a lot of measures have been taken by the state and the central government but not a single measure attempted so far has eradicated this problem of the city.

According to the reports, in the past few years, lakhs of people have been affected especially near the areas of Anil Nagar, Lachit Nagar, Panjabari, RG Barua Road and so on. A lot of them were electrocuted from the electric wires that they weren’t aware of due to the floods.

Although natural topography and the excessive rainfall are the reasons of flood but, human interventions in our natural surroundings also contribute to the floods. The poorly maintained embankments of river Brahmaputra and the rapid urbanization of the city are the other reasons for the Guwahati floods.

The data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated that the floods of 2017 were the worst of the last four years. The administration sets up a number of relief camps during the floods, but the number of displaced is increasing year by year. The city now has lost the count of the number of deaths due to floods. At this point in time, it is advisable for the administration to carefully find a way to solve the issue rather than directly jump into the solution.
