Flood situation improves in Goalpara

GOALPARA, July 29: The flood situation in Goalpara district has been slightly improved with the water level in Brahmaputra River maintaining decreasing trend on Friday.

The flood inundated at least 219 revenue villages under Lakhipur, Matia and Balija circles.

The Jaleswar constituency under the Lakhipur revenue circle has been identified as worst affected. Most part of it remained cut from the rest of the district for five days forcing people to take shelter in high places and on embankments.

Meanwhile, flood relief camps have been established in the schools and administration has taken initiatives to provide relief materials in some selected camps. 19 camps have been set up under the Balija and 16 under the Matia revenue circle.

Several wards under Goalpara Municipal area have also faced the wrath of the deluge and people were compelled to shift to relief camps. The worst affected areas in the town are Bhatipara Notun Bosti, Kalitapara, Baniapara, Karbola, New Bakurpara, Kalpa gar, Dosti gar etc.

According to the information, about 144, 913 persons have been affected by flood.
