Floods wreak havoc in Dima Hasao

HAFLONG, April 27: The pre-monsoon floods and heavy landslides triggered by incessant rains durog the last few days have seriously affected the normal life in Dima Hasao in general and in Harangajao and Dittakchera area in particular.

Though there has been no report of casualty except one incident of missing near Miyunkro but several families rendered homeless at Harangajao and Dittakchera during this week.

At Harangajao, dwellings, schools buildings, roads, culverts and bridges were affected resulting in a total disruption of communications. Since last fortnight, there was no power supply, no network and communication with other parts of the district. Flood water entered several houses and damaged totally. People have somehow saved their children but could not save live stocks and paddy.

It is alleged that taking the advantage of the situation some dishonest businessmen have raised the prices of essential commodities and even created artificial shortage of kerosene and other commodities. The people are on the verge of starvation due to shortage of food grains at Harangajao and Dittakchera. Till today no representative from District Administration and NC Hills Autonomous Council, except the local Member of Autonomous Council Amendu Hojai visited the place, alleged the local people.

Hojai, MAC, NCHAC along with some of BJP members and office bearers visited the entire area of Harangajao to assess the actual damages caused by recent flood.

He also made some arrangement to restore the road communication in between Haflong and Harangajao with the help of JKM, a construction company engaged for the construction of NH 54 E. By evening, with the initiative of MAC Hojai the communication between Haflong and Harangajao was restored for light vehicular. More than hundreds of loaded vehicles bound for Silchar were stranded for at least six days at several locations due to disruption of road.

Talking to this correspondent, Lokendra Haphila, Mouzadar of Harangajao said entire Harangajao mouza has been affected due to heavy rain followed by heavy landslide and flood resulting to utter sufferings to the people.

He appealed to the district administration to provide relief to these affected people immediately and also expedite the restoration of road communication.

Hojai while interacting with the reporters said as soon as he got the information of such catastrophic condition of the people Harangajao reached Harangajao on Tuesday by road and visited all the flood victims and also assured to provide possible help from him.

He also approached the district administration and the NC Hills Autonomous Council for providing immediate relief to these affected people of Harangajao and Dittakchera.

He further informed the media that he would be submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner very soon detailing the damages caused by the recent flood.
