IMPHAL, April 13: Manipur on Monday remembered the 16 persons who were killed in two separate encounters with the security forces. Nine insurgents were killed in an encounter at Kadampokpi near Imphal on April 13,1982. Another seven insurgents were also killed in an encounter at Tekcham in Thoubal district on June 16, 1981.

Floral tributes were paid by the family members and close relatives at the martyrs/ memorial complex at Cheiraoching near Imphal. Every year the police have been trying to prevent them from assembling there. This has forced the family members to seek recourse to legal redress. The court had directed the government to allow the family members to pay floral tributes.

Police take their own time to establish the status of the family members. On Monday, adequate security measures were taken up.

However, many other family members and close associates of the family members had gone to Kadampokpi where the encounter took place.
