Bongaigaon: Illegal mining of a hill was averted on Saturday in Bongaigaon by some conscious people in association with members of Greater Bongaigaon Press Club. Responding to public demand, the administration ordered to stop the illegal mining.
Talking to mediapersons, Mohidhar Ray, a social worker, said that since the last few days it was noticed that mining was going on in Sanyasi hill near Bongaigaon town. “This land of about 12 bighas was registered as forest land since 1968 to 1988. But after 1988, this land was registered as private land and some Choudhury became its owner. We were surprised as to how forest land could become private land? Nobody from the department was able to find out any paper which could justify this. Hence today some conscious people under the banner of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and Greater Bongaigaon Press Club staged protest against the illegal mining,” said Ray.
Finally, the ADC Bongaigaon arrived at the spot and ordered to stop the mining. He also assured to enquire as to how forest land could become private land.
