Former Congress legislators Kalyan Gogoi and Jaychandra gbanshi no more

DIBRUGARH, Sept 30:   Former Dibrugarh legislator Dr Kalyan Kumar Gogoi passed away on Thursday night at Guwahati after a massive heart attack. The shock of his death news was multiplied among the local congress workers and sympathizers when the news of another veteran congress leader, former minister and four-time MLA of Moran LAC, Joychandra gbangshi's sudden demise at a local Nursing Home at Dibrugarh was poured in. Gogoi was 70. He died at his residence at ABC Colony Guwahati, after a massive cardiac arrest. Gogoi born in harkatia , in 1944,  was an alumni of DHSK College. He obtained his Degree in Dental Medicine from Dr R Ahmed Dental College, Kolkata.

He joined Congress party in 1996 and contested the Dibrugarh LAC seat in the same year and defeated his nearest rival, Tarath Buragohain of AGP by a margin of 5992 votes. Dr. Gogoi in his second stint in 2001 won the seat by defeating BJP Candidate, Ajit Chaliha by 25961 votes.

His political career as Dibrugarh MLA jolted when he contested the same seat for the third time and lost to BJP candidate Prashanta Phukan by a meager margin of 179 votes.

With this defeat Dr Gogoi's political career though came to an end but he continued his social activities till his death.

His body, according to family sources, is being carried to his residence in Seujpur, Dibrugarh, for his last rites.

 Dr. Gogoi is survived by three daughters, son-in laws, grandchildren besides his wife, family members and ardent admirers.

On the other hand, the death of the former Minister of Congress Government, and four time MLA of Moran LAC, Jaychandra gbanshi  has spelt a shock wave among the Congress workers and admirers of Moran. gbanshi had a sudden heart attack in the morning at about 8 am at his residence at Milan gar, here and was immediately brought to the nearest Nursing Home, but all efforts of the doctors went in vain as he breathed his last at 8.45 this morning. He was 72. He won the Moran LAC Seat on Indira Congress ticket in 1978 and in subsequent Assembly Elections to the same seat was comfortably won by him in 1983, 1991 and 1996.

In 1978 Elections, gbanshi defeated his nearest rival BJP Candidate Dayanda Borgohain by 3052 votes. in 1983 he won the seat by defeating Independent rival Bonshi Bihari , by 5335 votes. In 1983 Rajbonshi , became the Excise and Labour Minister in the Late Hiteswar Saikia Government.

In 1991 Rajbonshi won the seat for the fourth time by defeating AGP candidate Kiron Kumar Gogoi by 13992 votes.  

gbanshi is survived by one son, daughter, his wife and family members and a host of wellwishers.

His body was brought to Rajiv Bhawan , here, where the Congress party  members paid their last respect to the departed soul. Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, ALA speaker Ranjit Das and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi have condoled the demise of the two veteram political leaders.

The sudden demise of both the veteran Congress leaders of Upper Assam was also deeply condoled by ACMS president and former DoNER Minister, Paban Singh Ghatowar; secretary Dileswar Tanti and spokesperson of District Congress Committee, Azad Khan and president Dr Anwar Hussain.
