Former Justice Gyani releases report on influx

GUWAHATI, March 31: A six-member panel led by Justice (Retired) VD Gyani today released here a report titled, ‘Unrest in Assam’, on illegal migration to the state since the independence and on the 2012 ethnic violence in Western Assam. “The illegal migration to the state from the neighboring country has become a serious threat for the identity of the indigenous people of the state for which there has to have some solutions. After visiting every corners of the state, we have seen ground reality. This issue can change the demography of the region,” Gyani told reporters here.  “To get rid of these problems, the people of the state have to be united and fight for their identity. A commission should be formed by the centre to take stock of tiol Register for Citizens, 1951 in every district of the state,” he added.

The former judge said that verification of ancestral lineage should be from voter list of 1951, detection of suspected infiltrators on the basis of their knowledge on Assamese language, relocation of all villages within 25 kilometers on Indo-Bangladesh border, cancellation of permissions and demolition of all religious institutions within 25 kilometers of intertiol border, declaration of time period for voluntary disclosure of origil citizenship with an offer to issue work permits, a special anti-terrorism law for entire northeast region are needed to ensure our security.
