JORHAT, May 4: Jorhat MLA Ra Goswami on Monday laid the foundation stone of a three-storey office-cum-building at Rajabari Jorhat to be constructed by demolishing the two room-old office of the Mahukuma Parishad which is already in a dilapidated condition.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Ra Goswami said, “The idea to build a new multi-purpose building was nurtured quite earlier by the members of the Zila Parishad. The entire project is valued at Rs 1.25 crore which is being utilized from the fund of the members of the Zila Parishad. During my tenure as chairman of the Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB), I had to first function from these two rooms of the office and later shifted to the brand new building of JMB at AT Road. I have instructed the concerned authorities that there should be no compromise in the quality of construction and it should stand as an asset to be witnessed by the people passing through Rajabari Road.”

The MLA further said, “The ground floor will be used as a parking lot while the first floor will have an office, conference hall and a godown which will be mainly utilized to store items of government schemes meant for the general public. In absence of a proper godown, many items perish. Again the second floor will have a guest house to provide accommodation to panchayat workers and even on-duty government officers who sometimes do not find a place in the Circuit House and also for those crossing over from Majuli who cannot return back due to flood and torrential rain.”

Present in the public meeting were former JMB chairman Prasanta Bora, Joint Director of DIPR Jorhat Dusmanta Madhav Sharma, architect and designer Bikash Bordoloi, noted businessman OP Khetan and Basant Khetan, besides a host of Zila Parishad members.
