Bongaigaon, February 15: “The social environment of Chirang district is gradually being destroyed due to rampant gambling,” alleged some local people of Chirang district on Monday.
Ranjan Ray, a local resident, said that since the last few days, gambling had increased in Chirang district. “Open gambling is going on in the Ganesh Puja field of Kakragaon Beltoli area under Dhaligaon PS of Chirang district since February 12. But surprisingly police and administration are silent in this regard. The local people protested against this gambling but some members of the Puja organizing committee threatened us to keep silent. For permitting gambling in the Puja field, the committee will get a handsome amount of money from the people who run the gambling business. We have been compelled to remain silent in this regard. But we are concerned that this social disease may affect the future of our children,” he said. Various organizations, including student organizations, are also silent in this case.
