Garo Bodies Reiterate Demand for Autonomous Council

Goalpara: The United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee (UGACMC) on Thursday submitted an online memorandum to the Prime Minister of India demanding for an autonomous council for the Garo people residing in Assam.

Signed by Alex K. Sangma and Thengsil Sangma, president, and secretary, the memorandum demanded a separate autonomous council within the framework of the Indian Constitution.

“The Garo people are the second largest ethnic tribe in Assam after the Bodos and largest inside the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC). However, Rabha people have their own council but not the Garos. Garo areas in respect of development are receiving step-motherly treatment from every government,” stated the memorandum. “Only fulfilling the demand of a separate autonomous council can address the dreams and aspirations of the Garo people. Thus, for the holistic development and to keep up the morale of the tribe, the government should create the council,” said the memorandum.

Significantly, the Garo organizations have already met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and reportedly received his moral support.
