GMC carries out eviction in Fancy Bazar

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 20: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) officials on Thursday carried out an eviction drive on the footpaths of SS Road in the Fancy Market area of Guwahati.

The GMC officials declared the place as a ‘no-vending zone’ which led to uproar among the vendors in the area. Around 300 vendors who had set up small shops on the footpaths were evicted during the GMC drive.

According to GMC Joint Commissioner Debo Mishra, around 230 vendors have been asked to shift to the Fancy Bazar Complex of Guwahati Municipal Corporation. Meanwhile, the vendors staged strong protests in the area after they had been evicted. The vendors are not ready shift to the GMC market as it stinks. The vegetable market there is not an ideal place for cloth business, they say.

It must be noted that the Gauhati High Court ordered the vendors to be shifted before March 31 of this year and the whole process is already getting delayed.

The eviction will continue.
