Gogoi, Sonowal to flag off SAF Games awarness run

GUWAHATI, Jan 20:  The fil countdown has begun for the 12th South Asian Games which will be held in Guwahati and Shillong from February 5-16.

Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi and Sarbanda Sonowal, Union Sports Minister, are all set to flag off a unique ‘Run for North East’ which will be held in the Guwahati on Thursday. Around 10,000 participants along with a few celebrities like Kunjarani Devi, Bhogeswar Barua are expected to join the run.

The Run for North East is being organised in both the host cities of the 12th South Asian Games, Shillong and Guwahati, on January 21 and 22 respectively, to raise awareness and spread enthusiasm amongst the people of the two cities for the Games and to highlight the achievement of the region in sports.

Addressing a media gathering Adille Sumariwalla, the president of the Athletic Federation of India and key official of the organizing committee which will organize the run, said that the race will kick off from Soram ground at 8 in the morning and will be culmited at the Nehru stadium. The event will also tie in a relay conveying the South Asian Games torch from the Soram field to the Nehru stadium.

He added that eminent athlete of the state will be felicitated after the completion of the race at the Nehru stadium.

The media briefing was also attended by Rajiv Prakash Baruah, Additiol Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) and Subhash Basumatari, Director, Sport Functiol Area, South Asian Games 2016.
