Government Failed To Take Preventive Measures For Japanese Encephalitis: AASU

GUWAHATI: The threat from vector-borne diseases, especially from JE (Japanese Encephalitis), is alarming in the State. While JE has claimed 33 lives, 122 other patients have tested JE positive in the State so far. The situation has led a central team to take stock of the situation on Monday.

Expressing its concern over the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis in the State, the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) has blamed it on the government, and said that the situation has come to such a pass due to failure on the part of the department to take preventive measures in advance. The students’ body wants the government to take measures on a war footing, besides paying compensation to the affected people.

Meanwhile, activists of the All Guwahati Students’ Union (AGSU) demonstrated on the premises of the Directorate of Health Services at Hengrabari here on Tuesday against, what they said, failure on the part of the State government to fight JE. They demand preventive measures taken on a war footing to keep JE at bay. In a statement issued to the media on Tuesday, AGSU president Rojmil Ali and general secretary Raifuddin Ahmed said: “The government has failed to take preventive measures in advance, leading to such a situation now. The government must take preventive measures on a war footing now to keep the vector-borne disease at bay.”
