Government has failed to provide to quality education: CM

Tura, Sept 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Sunday said that government has not been able to provide access to quality education as it has to fulfill the mandate to provide free and compulsory education.

“We have the onus of tackling school dropouts, which has remained the prime focus of the government”, he said, while laying the foundation stone of Science Block at Loyola College in Williamgar in East Garo Hills.

Chief Minister Sangma underscored the need to forge partnership with likeminded educatiol institutions to provide quality education to usher an era of positive development of the youths. 

“We have miles to go and rejoice the sense of accomplishment,” he said.

The Chief Minister also said that there has been inherent problem with respect to education and the government was making all its effort to overcome it. 

“We have to further proceed to reach a stage, where we can actually claim that we are one of the developed State,” Mukul said.

The students of Loyola College performed an operetta of a popular play titled “Annie”, a Broadway musical based upon the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, which was witnessed by Sangma and Education Minister Deborah Marak. 

“We are not giving due weightage to co-curricular activities, which is of utmost importance”, he said, while making an announcement that government would encourage organizations and individuals, who would like to promote drama in the state of Meghalaya.

“Drama as a weapon of transformation can instill good qualities and virtues”, he added, while informing that the government has chalked out a plan to ensure that the surrendered rebels were engaged in art and drama, so that they can overcome the rebellious ture in them.
