Government to strengthen VDPs

GUWAHATI, Jan 30: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that improved law and order situation in the State can be attributed to the increasing role of Village Defence Party which is doing yeoman’s service in strengthening law and order even in the remote part of the State.

Addressing an open session of the 67th foundation day of the Village Defence Party at Patacharkuchi in Barpeta district on Friday Gogoi said, “It is because of the unflinching role of the VDP, an improved law and order situation is prevailing in the State”. He also said, “Our role is to bring about all round development in the villages of Assam by realizing Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj and VDP is extending its role immensely towards rural development”.

Gogoi however, said that VDPs need to be strengthened in view of its challenging role. He also informed that in recognition to the unwavering role of the VDP, Government will give away CM’s medallion along with cash assistance to the best VDP to instill a sense of motivation and encouragement among them. Gogoi also said that the Government would provide night vision appliances, bikes, cycles etc to them to help them do their jobs efficiently. He also called upon the VDPs to take up the challenge and foil the evil design of divisive forces which are creating rifts in the me of religions, caste, creeds etc in the tion.

Chief Minister Gogoi also gave away awards and mementos to the VDPs in recognition to their selfless service.

Irrigation Minister Chandan Sarkar, Director General of Assam Police Mukesh Sahay also spoke on the occasion.
