Government trying to leave out names of genuine citizens from NRC: Tarun Gogoi

NAGAON, July 14: “The BJP-led State Government wants to create panic instead of solving problems in Assam and as a part of that, the State Government is trying to leave out the names of thousands of genuine citizens of the State from the NRC,” alleged former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday during a press conference held at Nagaon Rajiv Bhavan.

Gogoi further said that the NRC authority in the State was trying to leave out the names of thousands of minority people and even linguistic minority Indian citizens were under the constant pressure of the BJP governments at the Centre and the State. Expecting an unpleasant situation in the entire State, the Sarbananda Sonowal government had called in 150 additional paramilitary companies.

Gogoi alleged that the law-and-order situation in the State was worsening under the BJP government and crimes against women and children were in the rise. He said that more than a year had passed since the murder of minority leader Lafikul Islam but the government had not yet traced the culprits. This further implied the failure of the State Government.

He stated that those whose names were enrolled in the voter’s list of 2014-16 were genuine Indian citizens and if their names were left out from the NRC, the Congress would fight for them as per law. Gogoi said that the Congress had brought about real change in the State and the change brought about by the BJP only existed in advertisements.

Gogoi slammed the BJP government for allegedly failing to solve the unemployment problem in the State, as promised before the polls. Former minister Rakibul Hussain, MLA Nurul Hoda, senior party leader Bishnu Prasad other district party leaders were present in the press conference.
