Governor set to take over KHADC

OUR STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, March 20: The All Regiol Party Alliance (ARPA) manouvre to push on with its eleven month old executive committee (EC) at the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is over.  The government has already recommended the imposition of Governor’s Rule in the KHADC.

Well placed sources in the Government told The Sentinel, “There has not been a single precedent where the Governor returned the recommendations to stabilize governce in any of the district councils,” adding “the ratification for the imposition of the administrator’s rule (Governor’s rule) is only a matter of time”.  The Governor has been briefed about the flip-flop show of two defected MDCs.

Two elected members - mely Grace Kharpuri and James Sylliang - put down their sigtures on March 10 and both of them were sigtories to two separate representations submitted to the government. “These are the contradictions that made us advise the government to impose Governor’s rule”, stated an official, even as he added that the advisory to the government has nothing to do with the political dispensation in the KHADC. The virtual confirmation of a Governor’s rule in the KHADC is a body blow to ARPA, an alliance that has sought the gubertorial intervention into the alleged biasness of the Congress led government in the state. ARPA, an alliance full of contradictions, is a constituent of the UDP-HSPDP-KHM and an independent candidate.

“Let us see the political situation in the council in the next six months…after that we will take a decision,” stated District Council Affairs minister HDR Lyngdoh. He claimed that the political fiasco was created by the elected members of the council. Interestingly, HDR Lyngdoh is also an elected Congress MDC.  The Congress-led People Democratic Front (PDF) seems to be a happy lot though it failed to grab power. PDF functiories told this correspondent that they are treading cautiously in the game. Sources said that the Congress was making efforts to take over the KHADC by garnering the requisite numbers.
