Granting ST status will directly help to encroach the tribal territories by the six advanced and populous communities: CCTOA

Kokrajhar: The Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organisations of Assam (CCTOA) also known as the umbrella organizations of the 19 scheduled tribe (Plains and Hills) organizations of Assam on Monday demanded for immediate withdrawal of the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) order (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in order to safeguard the Constitutional Rights of the Scheduled Tribes of Assam in particular and India in general.

The body also demanded to provide for appropriate and adequate Government support to all the six OBC communities within the quota of their reservation instead of providing them ST status.

They also demanded a tripartite talk with the Union Home Minister, Chief Minister of Assam and Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organisations before the next Parliament session.

The bodies further stated in a press statement that if these six communities are given ST status will directly help to encroach the tribal territories by the six advanced and populous communities, thus opening floodgates of possibilities of enlisting non-tribal communities across all the states in the country thereby annihilate the very concept of being a tribe in India.

The Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organisations of Assam also seeks support from all the existing ST’s of India and also well-wishers of the community in this regard.

Furthermore, CCTOA also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi in this regard.
