GSU threatens intensive agitations

SHILLONG, May 8: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Khun Hynniewtrep tiol Awakening Movement(KHM) and the Khyriem Clan on Friday demanded the state government to immediate release the arrested KSU leader Daniel Khyriem without any conditions.Terming the arrest as a betrayal by the Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma who had earlier assured them that all charges against the organizations who are demanding for ILP would be dropped. Tengsak G. Momin President of GSU on Friday said, “This is a betrayal by the Government not just to us but to the people of Meghalaya,”adding “The second instance of betrayal is the arrest of one of the leaders demanding ILP when it was assured that all charges will be dropped.”“Why is the govt arresting just one of us? The Chief Minister should arrest all of us; we are all in this together; the 12 Civil Societies and NGOs,” said Momin. Momin informed that the Chief Minister in a meeting held last year had assured them that all charges against the organisation who are demanding ILP will be dropped along with his retinue of Ministers, MLAs, bureaucrats and officers.

He also promised a slew of mechanisms to check influx which would be done at the earliest but which is being lackadaisically dragged by the government even now.“From this point of view, it looks like the govt wishes to drag on the “Comprehensive Mechanism” to check influx,” said Momin.Momin informed that the Chief Minister in a meeting held last year had assured them that all charges against the organisation who are demanding ILP will be dropped along with his retinue of Ministers, MLAs, bureaucrats and officers. “Dr. Mukul Sangma may want to deter us from checking influx with oppressive tactics of this kind but we promise him we will continue to fight influx which is like gangrene to the people of Meghalaya,” said Momin adding “We condemn the arrest of the President of KSU and we demand that he must be released unconditiolly.”
