Guwahati, June 9: Governor PB Acharya has congratulated the Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration on taking the initiative for declaring the Gangetic River Dolphin as the mascot for the State capital. In a statement here on Thursday, Acharya said, “The move will help in generating awareness for this protected creature which is on the verge of extinction”. Guwahati has become the first city in the country to have its city animal. “Good to have a city animal in the form of Gangetic River Dolphin which will be considered as the city’s mascot and will create awareness for the animal which is an important element of Assam’s rich and unparallel biodiversity”, the Governor said. Along with the Gangetic River Dolphin, the Governor also appealed the people of Assam to protect and preserve the other endangered animals and birds before they get extinct.
