Hailakandi: In keeping sync with the ‘Tyohar’ (Festival) slogan of Election Commission of India, Deputy Commissioner, Hailakandi, Keerthi Jalli went door-to-door making an impassioned plea to the women voters to come out in large numbers to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on April 18.

Accompanied by SVEEP Cell Incharge Tridip Roy, Jalli called upon all women voters to take time out of their household chores and family obligations to assert their democratic right by exercising their franchise in the forthcoming elections.

Coinciding with the two-day Holi festivity, Jalli hit Tempur under Matijuri-Paikan Gaon Panchayat under the Hailakandi development block (chosen as a salute to all the working class people the town relies on) to spread the message of ‘pledge to vote’, and distributed sakhas to resident Bengali Hindu married women. She played colours with them and, in turn, took their promise to vote in the impending Lok Sabha elections.

The limited edition sakhas had ‘pledge to vote on April 18’ written around them reminding the women to go out and cast their franchise. Said Debjani, an aged woman, “I have never seen before a Deputy Commissioner coming out to play holi with us and making an appeal to cast vote in the upcoming elections. It has made a great impact on us and made us realise the importance of voting.”

The Hailakandi district administration has taken up a slew of activities through voter awareness campaigns in Hailakandi, Algapur and Katlicherra LACs falling under HP 1 Karimganj SC constituency to enhance the percentage of polling compared to the last Assembly elections held in 2016. Rallies, street plays, songs and dances, interpersonal communication, mass media programmes and competitions are being organized to create awareness among voters. “SVEEP activities should not be taken lightly as the Election Commission deputes senior government officers as observers,” said District Information and Public Relations Officer, Sabir Nishat.
