Hailakandi observes Martyrs’ Day

Hailakandi, Jan 31: Hailakandi district administration observed the 69th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, observed as Martyrs’ Day, with due solemnity on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner Moloy Bora led the officials and staff in paying homage to the Father of the tion Mahatma Gandhi, stated a press release. Bora paid floral tributes to the life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Ghat in Hailakandi town. Superintendent of Police Prab Jyoti Goswami, Additiol Deputy CommissionerRuth Lienthang, Assistant Commissioner Tridip Roy and other officials also paid their respects to the great soul.

Recalling the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Deputy Commissioner Bora termed the Mahatma as a ‘radiant and great persolity’. Bora said the teachings of the Mahatma were more relevant with every passing day. Making a clarion call to the people, especially the youth to follow the ideals of the Mahatma, Bora said, “It is only by following in Gandhiji’s footsteps that we can pay our fitting and lasting tribute to the great soul.”

Earlier, a two-minute silence was observed in memory of the great soul and also as remembrance of those who laid down their lives in freeing the country from colonial yoke. Employees of government and private offices, merchant associations, school students and people from all walks of life observed silence to pay respects to Mahatma Gandhi and the martyred souls. Movement of vehicles came to a halt as a mark of respect.
