Half marathon organized in memory of martyrs

DHUBRI, Oct 23: A half marathon was organized in memory of martyrs who laid down their lives in the line of duty by 67 Bn. BSF based in Alamganj of Dhubri district on Sunday. The marathon run which was started from Gauripur Railway Station at 7 am and finished at BSF camp at Alamganj, was participated by nearly 1,200 enthusiastic, including 300 girls. A huge crowd of around 3,000 people cheered the runners all along both sides of NH-31 stretching over 11 km marathon route. A BSF source said that there were two categories separately for boys and girls and first 10 in each category were selected as winners of the prize.
Hemanta Roy and Sabi Yasmin bagged the first position in the boys’ and girls’ category respectively and each of them were awarded Rs.10,000, a gold medal and certificate. The marathon run was followed by a cultural programme and prize distribution ceremony, source added.
Earlier, programme was started with paying heartfelt homage and floral tribute to six BSF martyrs belonging to Dhubri and lbari districts of Assam by local MLA Nizanur Rahman, who was the chief guest in the programme. BSF Commandant Gajendra Sharma also paid homage and offered floral tribute to the martyrs and thanked the chief guest for his presence and participation in the function. Rahman in his brief speech lauded the initiative by BSF for organizing the half marathon in memory of the martyrs. “This is for a noble cause and gesture shown by the BSF which will go a long way in boosting the morale of the local people here,” he added.
