SHILLONG, Dec 8: One hard core Garo tiol Liberation Army (GNLA) cadre was apprehended today by Tura police when he came to collect extortion money from victims.

According to police, Balsrang Ch Momin (23) was sent by “Indian”, the self-styled “Area Commander” of the outfit to collect extortion money from Tura.

According to IG (Operations), GHP Raju, Balsrang was using black SIM cards to threaten the victims. His SIM cards were seized by police.

“He used to demand on behalf of GNLA commander Indian. During his interception at Dobasipara he tried to fight the SOT boys and attempted to flee.  In the struggle he jumped the cliff at the bus station at Dobasipara and received some injuries,” Raju said.

The arrested GNLA cadre also revealed the modus operandi of extortion of the GNLA from the businessmen and government servants.

“They send SMS to these people after obtaining their numbers from their office staff or workers working in the shops,” Raju said.

He also revealed that some people voluntarily shared the mobile numbers of officers and business people to GNLA and other militant groups to settle persol scores.  

According to police, GNLA sends extortion SMSes to these victims ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

Meanwhile, another GNLA cadre- Sengrak, who was waiting in a Maruti car for him, maged to flee before the police could identify him.

Balsrang told police that Sengrak has already received money before fleeing away.  

In another incident, Daddengre police have arrested a senior ASAK cadre-Luhit A Sangma.

According to police Luhit is a member of ASAK group led by Amson Sangma.
