Hardcore GNLA rebel killed in encounter

SHILLONG, March 22: The dreaded area commander of the Garo tiol

Liberation Army (GNLA), Salng T Sangma alias  Balti Momin alias Walng T Sangma was killed in an encounter with the police at Bangsi Alda under Mendipathar police station in North Garo Hills district on Tuesday evening.

The slain area commander was involved in the gruesome killing of a woman and a mother of five on May 12, 2015 at Chokpot.

He was also the prime accused in the killing of Head Police constable Kamaraj Bhatarrai and businessman Batchu Jain.  

Sangma is origilly from Megam Akong village under Kharkuta area bordering Assam’s Goalpara district.

Police sources said acting on an intelligence input about the presence of four to five GNLA militants in the village, the SWAT team launched operation resulting a heavy exchange of fire with the militants.

Four to five GNLA cadres maged to flee under the cover of jungles. A 9 mm carbine, AK-47 Magazines and some ammunition and other incrimiting material were found on the slain rebel.

Meanwhile, in another incident, an over-ground worker of the GNLA, identified as Masan Marak (59) of Rongramgri village under Rongram police station in West Garo Hills district was arrested today.

According to the BSF source the detained linkman was waiting for Simphong B Marak alias Rongbat (GNLA Area Commander of North Garo Hills) at waiting shed, Hawakha near MDC Hostel in Tura.

One Nokia Mobile with one Vodafone SIM, one knife, one sling bag and Rs 110 were recovered from his possession. BSF sources claimed that the arrested man revealed his acquaintance with GNLA cadre mely Simphong B Marak alias Rongbat.
