KOKRAJHAR, Feb 9: The World Society of Mathematical Sciences celebrated the Hardy-Ramanujan First Correspondence Days in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, Kokrajhar Govt. College on Tuesday to mark the day which play a crucial role in bringing Srinivasa Ramanujan to the limelight of the world of mathematicians.

In the programme Dr. S. Basak, Head of the Department of Mathematics, Kokrajhar Government College and Supreme of Workers, World Society of Mathematical Sciences, said that the society decided to celebrate the Hardy-Ramanujan First Correspondence Days from this year in the duration from January 16 to February 8 every year. About 50 students and teachers assembled in the programme and paid floral tribute to Prof. Hardy and Ramanujan.

Explaining the purpose and importance of the programme, Dr. Basak discussed about the contents of the letter of Srinivasa Ramanujan, written on January 16, 1913 to Prof.  G H Hardy reflecting the reaction of Prof. Hardy while going through the letter of Ramanujan which was enriched with many already proven and many new results of infinite series , continued fractions, number theory.

Dr Basak pointed out that Ramanujan had written letters to many established mathematicians, but no one except Prof. Hardy responded. Had Prof. Hardy not responded, probably we would not have got Ramanujan as a mathematician.
