Headmen from the suburb oppose MUDA decision

SHILLONG, JUNE 30: Headmen from the suburb of the city under the leadership of former Minister and current Headman of Mawlai Nonglum S. D Khongwir met with the Chief Secretary PBO Warjri to express their disapproval regarding the decision of MUDA to expand its jurisdiction to areas under the Autonomous Districts.

It may be mentioned that MUDA had earlier issued notices on January 22, 2015 which stated that “All types of building constructions within the Shillong Master Plan Area require ‘prior permission’ of the MUDA with immediate effect as the schedule of boundaries.”

“We are strongly against the decision of the MUDA to ask people to seek permission for new building construction even as the areas are outside the jurisdiction of the Municipal,” S. D Khongwir told the media here on Tuesday.

“If MUDA wants the people who are residing outside their jurisdiction to seek permission for new building construction then they should do it legally not illegally because these areas falls under the jurisdiction of the Autonomous District,” he added.

He also said that there are some houses in which the construction work started in 2011 and now when the construction is nearing completion MUDA insist that permission needs to be taken. This is not acceptable.

“The Chief Secretary has assured us that he will look into the matter,” Khongwir said.
