Shillong, Sept 13: The Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (Headmen’s Body), has decided to hold a “peaceful march” on September 16.

According to secretary of the headmen’s body, RL Blah, the members of the dorbar shnongs will gherao the Raj Bhavan on that day to show their opposition to the delay on the part of the Governor, V Shanmugathan to give his assent to the Village Administration Bills.

It may be mentioned that earlier this year the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) had passed the two bills to empower the headmen.

The headmen’s body has also urged to depute at least ten members from each dorbar shnongs especially those from the city and its outskirts for this purpose.

Meanwhile, the headmen’s body has also opposed the delay on the part of the State government to revoke the Ordince which was notified on May 29, to empower the headmen.

The conglomerate of traditiol heads of Khasi-Jaintia hills also opposed the attempt of the government to bring the draft bill on headmen during the autumn session of the assembly and also its refusal to withdraw its notification on MUDA building bye laws from all the Sixth Schedule Areas. It may be mentioned that on Monday, around nine pressure groups led by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) will peace-march to protest against the government’s failure to withdraw the ordince. The march will start from Motphran towards the Main Secretariat. The HYC is irked at the attempt of the State government to intervene into the subject matter of the District Council.
