Heavy rain throws life out of gear in Silchar

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, June 8: Most of the streets of this town go under water which has become a chronic problem for the citizens. One shower and the water logging lead to enormous hardship for them. The civic authorities, municipal board, development authority and town and country planning, look indifferent. There is neither any planning nor systematic execution of work. The worst sufferers are the road and street users. A few hours of rain inundates lain and by-lanes, not to speak of roads. It becomes difficult for the pedestrians to move across the town. Various places of the town get submerged under deep water. Areas around Soi Road, Link Road, tiol Highway point, Rangirkhari and Ambicapatty remain submerged even after the rain has subsided. Many interior areas of the town go under water due to the lack of proper draige system.

People residing at areas like Shillongpatty, Club Road, Church Road, Vivekanda Road, Ukilpatty and Malugram face lot of problems. The residents of the town have been promised proper draige facility but till today, no significant improvement has been sighted. “It becomes difficult for pedestrians to go out during the rainy season. Every year, we have to face the same problem,” said Rajat Das, who was wading through the submerged parts on the tiol Highway point.

Owing to the problem of water logging, employees, students and street vendors are facing difficulties. Employees reach their offices late and students too have to stay indoors when it downpours heavily. Vinod, a street vendor, rrating his woes said, “We make food items on daily basis and have to sell it on the same day itself. The condition of the road, which remains submerged, forces us to stay at home.” Like Vinod, there are innumerable streets vendors who are uble to come out and earn a living for a day.

Arun Choudhury, a central government employee said, “We have to reach office on time. But, flooded streets make it difficult for vehicles to pass.” Even auto-rickshaws and rickshaws are uble to move through the deep water. The health and hygienic of the residents of the flooded areas gets badly affected. Stagnt water causes mosquitoes to breed and consequently, it leads to fatal diseases. The civic authorities in coordition with health department should look into the matter seriously.

Some of the educatiol institutions due to water logging have to be shut down. Students in particular face setback in their studies. It is high time that the municipal board should address to the problem seriously and tackle it on priority basis.
